We like to talk to interesting and creative businesses throughout the Greater Toronto Area. As those who have started a business know, it’s an exciting but challenging venture, and it’s always inspiring to hear someone else’s story…
New Moon Interiors serves Orangeville and the surrounding area. Owner Emily Lane has a passion for interior decorating and making your vision become a reality! We asked Emily to share her story…
What was the catalyst for starting your business?
After previously having another interior decorating business that unfortunately didn’t work out, I decided that this is my passion and I have to pursue it on my own.
How long have you been in business?
I have been in business for almost 1 year! But I have about 10 years of experience with interior decorating/staging and merchandising.
What did you find were the most challenging aspects of starting a business?
I would say thinking of a unique business name and branding. Starting a business can also be really scary as you’re taking a risk on yourself, but I always think that without risk there is no reward.
What is the difference between your business and others like it?
What sets me apart from other designers in the area would be my pricing for sure! I know I charge less than other designers.
I love choosing fabrics for my clients, I always find the perfect print or solid for them and if they are interested in custom window treatments, cushions or table linens I team up with my Mom who is an incredibly talented seamstress. I also have a merchandising background so naturally, I have a great eye for displays – putting together “displays” in people’s homes is what makes the space really come together.
What advice would you give someone who is starting a business?
You have to be fearless, ruthless and work VERY hard.
What kind of personality traits do you think are needed to start a business?
Someone who is a “take-action” person, someone who is a risk-taker, someone who is hardworking and believes in themselves to succeed.
What do you do when you need a little inspiration?
As I mentioned before I love fabrics and textiles so when I need some inspiration I will definitely check out my favourite fabric shops and websites. I also follow a lot of great designers on Instagram so scrolling through my account can give me LOTS of inspiration.
What services do you offer?
Paint Colour Consultations, Custom Window Treatments, Furniture / Furniture placement consultations, Room Re-design, seasonal decorating
