Resilience is something we hear a lot about, and we know that those who are able to reach their goals have this trait in spades. In business and in life, you will undoubtedly have set-backs.

So, what is resilience? It is the ability to grow from challenges and persevere. This quote also sums it up nicely…

Resilience depends on a few factors

You can navigate the tough times if you have the right mindset, skills and habits in place. Here are a few things to consider;

  1. Have a growth mindset. Adversity is not the end, and in fact, it can be the beginning of something better than you could ever imagine. Having a growth mindset means that you believe that you can adapt to setbacks, and build the skills necessary to be successful in reaching your goal, or adjusting the path to reach something even better. Believing that your intelligence and aptitudes are “fixed”, which is the opposite of the growth mindset, means that you believe that you are born with certain abilities that cannot be changed or improved. A fixed view can increase stress, as people attribute power to outside circumstances rather than their ability to handle them. This perceived lack of control can increase stress levels with every obstacle they face. Studies have shown that those with a growth mindset believe that they have the power to work towards a goal, and to navigate challenges effectively. They have a sense of control, and know that they can work with any problem. Studies show that they are able to achieve more than people who are objectively more intelligent than they are. Don’t underestimate the power of what you think is possible.
  2. Write it down. Take the time to reflect and outline your concerns in writing, then create a list of possible solutions. Writing and reflecting tends to unleash the mind in ways that talking cannot. Studies have shown that it is a resourceful tool in problem solving and reducing stress levels. Those who write about a current or past adversity tend to have an initial increase in stress, but then experience a steady decline long-term.
  3. Spend time with people that support you. Your time is precious, and you don’t have a lot of it, so think carefully about who you choose to spend it with. You should aim to be around people who are positive, and believe that you can accomplish your goals. Studies suggest that you take on the belief systems of those around you. If you are spending time with a group of people who are negative, and spend their time creating unnecessary drama and chaos, you will take on that negativity. Positive beliefs and views are also catchy. Which would you rather have? There is a reason that successful people say that they are careful about who they spend their time with.

Have a growth mindset and work steadily towards your goals to improve resiliency. It is possible to overcome obstacles and with practice, you will have a wealth of skills you can depend on in a crunch.
